IAAF WORLD CHALLENGE HYPOMEETING 2000, GÖTZIS 3./4. JUNE

I visited the Meeting the first time, and I was impressed by the work that organizer Konrad Lerch and his team did. It is a perfect organized meeting with the best service for the athletes, audience and the journalists. Also the technical equipment used there seems the be the modernest available.

Because the weather and audience were perfect, the performances of the athletes were also. I made lotīs of pictures, I hope that they are o.k. and I can publish the best of them on my homepage soon.

Now to the Decathlon:

Tomas Dvorak was on a pace for a +9000 score after day one. But on day two he lost a few points on each event against his own WR. At the Pole Vault he walked around restless between his attempts. He knew that this was the key for a new WR. But he couldnīt clear the 4,95 meters. His pole looked a bit too soft at the first two attempts to me, and on the 3rd he had the hight, but felt on the bar. At the javelin he seemed to be handicaped by problems with the right knee and he couldnīt score +70 meters. But at the end he scored 8900 points. This was the second best score ever done in the world !

Roman Sebrle became second with a great PR of 8757 points.

Erki Nool had a bad day one, but a great day 2. With both days together he also scored a PR of 8742 points.

Alexandr Yurkov surprised with many individual PRs and a total of 8574 points, which was the 4th place.

Attila Zivotzky scored a PR and National Record of 8554 points to become 5th.

Frank Busemann had bad luck in the hurdles, he lead Dvorak, but had a mistake at the 7th hurdle and nearly felt over the 9th. He used 4 steps to the 10th and finished in 14,72 seconds. But he didnīt quit and ran a great 1500m in 4:23,23 to score 8531 and take the 6th place.

Mike Maczey and Stefan Schmid, who seems to be coached by Frank Müller now, placed 7th and 8th with 8461 and 8445 points. Germany has a strong team this year !

Jon-Arnar Magnusson also had big problems in the hurdles. He nearly felt at the begin of the distance over a hurdle, and had to run behind the field. After 16,17 seconds he was in the finish. But he also didnīt give up the Decathlon and scored 8206 points to become 9th.

Philipp Huber showed a good Decathlon and became 10th with 8153 points.

Klaus Ambrosch had a good first day with two PRs he was nearly 300 points better than in his first Decathlon this season and on the pace for his first +8000 score. In the Discus he had two bad throws, but in the third he thew +40 meters to calm down the nerves of his coach Sepp Schmidl. The Pole Vault was his only weak event of this Decathlon, where he jumped 35cm under his PR. In the final event the 1500m he needed to run 4:37 (which was his PR) to score the A-limit for Sydney of 8050 points. He ran a great race with 4:30,12 and scored 8113 points.

Michael Schnallinger opend the Decathlon with two PRs, and was not satisfied with his high jump. But he had good performances in the other events, scored 7634 points to become 19th and showed that he has a big potential for the future.

Thomas Walser started with a great PR in the 100 meters, but the other events didnīt run perfect for him. At the last two events he set PRs again, to score a total PR of 7346 points. I think he can score much higher this season if he stays healthy.

Roland Schwarzl had bad luck, he injured his take-off foot one week before the meeting and was handicapted at the jumping events. He tried his best, but had to give up after the high jump. In the 100meters he ran a PR.
