Ambrosch Klaus

Date/Place of birth: 23.5.73 Knittelfeld
Height/Weight: 1.88 m/87 kg
Coach: Gerhard Zallinger
Team: UNION Salzburg

Started athletics with Longjump and Javelin. Picked up the Decathlon in 1994 as a trainingspartner of Heiko Mandl. Both were coached by Horst Mandl. In his first Decathlon Championships in Ried 1994 he placed 5th. In the indoorseason of 1995 he surprised with a good heptathlon at the championships. Heiko Mandl left the trainingsgroup in 1996, but with Thomas Tebbich came a new trainingspartner. In the winter of 1998 Klaus went to Arizona State college in the USA to get better trainingscondition. After two Decathlons of +7400 points he was the big surprise at the NCAA championships in Buffalo where he beat Hungarians Attila Zivotsky for the first place. In the winter of 1999 he left Arizona to join the Austrian Army and train in Salzburg with the Austrian Decathlon Headcoach Sepp Schmiedl. After a great indoor season, where Klaus and Thomas Tebbich scored over the old Heptathlonrecord of Gernot Kellermayr, he injured his hamstring in Mai. He needed very long to recover, and with a lack of speed-training he came back for the CISM in August. In the middle of September he became the national Champion a second time, with a big Javelin PR during the Decathlon. In the indoorseason Klaus set some new PRs, but with his Heptathlonresults he was not satisfied. After he didn´t qualify for the European Indoorchampionships he tried his first Decathlon early in the season in Australia. After an average first day he set good PRs in the last three events and a total PR of 7892 to win the open Australian Championships. In his second Decathlon in Götzis he scored his first +8000 score an qualified for the Olympic Games in Sydney. In Sydney he started with good resuts, but injured his hamstring again in the shot put. Though this handicap he finished the Decathlon with his second best lifetime score of 7917points. Into the 2001 season he started with a new PR in Götzis. At his sason peak at the World Championships he had three fouls in the long jump. He finished the season with two other Decathlons (WUG and Talence), where he also was away from his good shape from the begin of the season.
The Indoorseason 2002 he began with a Heptathlon PR in Talinn, where he qualified for the European Indoor Championships. The Outdoorseason 2002 wasn´t very good for Klaus, he had big problems with the long jump, and couldn´t put together a +8000 score.
In the indoorseason 2003 he did only one Heptathlon, with a PR in the 1000m he could defead Markus Walser for the national title.
In the outdoorseason he had bad luck by missing the qualification for the World Championships by just 10 points.
