Michael Arnold started with Athletics when he was very young. His first national title he won 1983, when he was first at the under 18 Decathlon Chamionships. Second was the one year older Gernot Kellermayr, who will be his biggest opponent in Austria for the next years.

As a Junior he qualified for both international Championships, 1985 for the European and 1986 for the first World Junior Championships. In Athens 1986 he also scored his first +7000 score in Decathlon. In 1987 he won his first national Austrian senior title in the Decathlon. Until the Pole Vault it looked like that Kellermayr would win, but he cleard only 4,30 meters, from this moment on the Arnold was the favorite for the title.

In 1988 he had bad luck at the Austrian Championships, where he and Georg Werthner tried to qualify for the Olympic Games. After a good start with 10,94 - 7,68 - 12,33 -2,06 Arnold had to give up because of an injured muscle. Werthner won with 7916 points, and qualified for his 4th Olympic Games. After that Arnold tried to make the team new strong event the Long Jump, but he couldnīt make it.

In the Indoorseason of 1989 Arnold won the national title in the Long Jump and qualified for the European Championships, but there he had three fouls.

In Götzis at least he had a competition, he scored 7866 points and jumped 7,93 meters and also 7,90 meters with regular wind.

In 1990 he won his second national senior title in the Decathlon and qualified for the European Chamionships in Split, where he placed 17th .
