Werthner Georg
Date/Place of birth: 7.4.56 LinzGeorg Werthner was the first Decathlete to finish 4 Olympic Decathlons. In 1988 after him Daley Thompson crossed the finish-line to
become the second Athlete to do this. Georg descended from a sporty family. His father had a PR of 62,48m in the Javelin. His younger brothers also did Decathlon. Roland has a PR of
7053p and Ulrich, who still competes in the Javelin 6034p. Georg became a world class athlete in the shadow of Sepp Zeilbauer, who followed the tradition of the good Austrian
Decathletes Mandl, Diessl and Herunter from the 60ies. His big break through came in 1975, when he placed second at the European Junior Championships with 7424 points. After his first
major success he was qualified for the World University Games in this year, where he became 5th. The interesting thing is, that he started right after that at the Austrian championships
, to get his first national Decathlon title. So he did in just 4 days two Decathlons with 7086 and 7220points - thats still the best ever for a "back-to-back" Decathlon. And at
the begin of the 80ies Werthner beat Zeilbauer at the Olympic Games in Moscow, to place 4th -
the best place ever for a male Austrian Track&Field athlete at Olympics.
Georg always tried to make the Decathlon popular in Austria. In 1980 he organized the first one hour
Decathlon, which was better to handle then the 1/2-hour that was done before. Spezially in the 90ies the 1 hour became very popular - and nearly all world class athletes in this period
tried it. In 1984 Georg organized the first Jedermann Decathlon - a Decathlon for male and female hobby athletes which donīt start for any track-clubs at meetings. The only reduction is, that the hurdles are a bit lower
than at normal Decathlons. This Jedermann Decathlons became very popular in Austria and Germany. There are much more Jedermann Decathlons than normal Decathlons in a season.
But most of the Jedermannīs have an IAAF-Group for professional athletes also. Georg always organizes the biggest of these events in Vienna with +600 starters in two days. The Record
of the IAAF Group is 8106p by Ramil Ganiev in 1994.
In 1983 Georg scored a new Austrian Record in the Pentathlon. His score of 4024 points is still place 14 in the World Alltime Lists. He
also placed 3rd at the World Univestiy Games for the 2nd time, after 1981, in this year. In 1984, when Georg prepared for his 3rd olympic Decathlon he was coached by Gunnar Prokop, the husband and
former coach of the world class athlete Liese Prokop. It was a very popular step of Georg to ask this coach to help him at the preperation for the Olymipcs, and they had the attention of
the Austrian medias. At the olympic Decathlon the first events didnīt workout that good as expected for Georg, but with a great finish in the last three events he still scored +8000 points and became 9th at
the Games. Then he moved for a year to Emmitsburg to make an MBA-degree. And in 1987 he worked at a bank in New York. At this time he concentrated on the triple jump, he has a
PR of 16,02m (16,13m wind aided) from this time. He also ran the famous New York Marathon in the USA in impressiv 3:25:52. After 1987, when everybody thought
he retired, he did his comeback for his 4th Olympic Games. Now he was coached by his brother Roland. He qualified at his last chance, at the national championships
with 7915p. Normally the last three events are Georgīs best ones. And after 7 events it looked like, he can score +8000. But at this Decathlon they didnīt work out too good. In Seoul he
became 21st.
In his long career Georg started at 95 Decathlons and finished 78 of them. All together he started until 1999 at 2650 competitions, and won 67 regional and 25 national Austrian senior titles. Today he still trains a bit athletics,
and spends lots of time to organize Viennas Jedermann Decathlons. In the end of September 2001 he scored a new Masters WR for M45 with 7855p (age graded score). The old WR was hold by Rex Harvey USA with 7780p.
Georg did the Decathlon without a reduction of the hurdles hight, because he competed in the open class.
