Mandl Jürgen played for six years soccer at the club Sturm Graz before he concentrated full on the Decathlon. Coached by his father he improved very good, and it looked like as he can become a world class athlete. But problems with his his back ended his Decathlon career vera early. His biggest success was the 7th place at the European Juniorchampionships in his first year as a junior, and the national senior title in 1985. After he quit the Decathlon he became a good bobsled pusher, and made a small comeback in 1989 at the Styrien Decathlon Championships.
