Horst Mandl needed very long to become a world class Decathlete. With 31 years he scored his first score over 7000 points. But he stayed very long in a good shape. His 6406 points, he scored with 40 years was a world veterans record until 1996. With 40 years he also jumped his PR in the High Jump with 2,02m and still jumped 14,32m in the Triple Jump.
His greatest success was the 6th place at the European Championships 1969. He was qualified for the Olympic Games 1968 in Mexico City, but there he dropped out injured. At the Games also Gert Herunter and Walter Diessl started. This three athletes made the Decathlon popular in Austria. All three competed at a world class level, and owned the Austrian Decathlon Record at least for one time. So they had a great challenge even on national level.
Horst Mandl collected 26 national titel. In the Triple Jump he won 9 consecutive titles, his PR is 15,04 meters in this event.
Horst Mandl also coached lots of good Austrian Decathletes: Hubert König, Jürgen Mandl (his son), Otto Petrovics, Klaus Ambrosch and now Thomas Tebbich.
