Sepp Zeilbauer in Montreal 1976

Josef "Sepp" Zeilbauer started Athletics in his Hometown Mürzzuschlag as a triple jumper. Sepp Hirsch, his coach at this time, made a Decathlete of him. In his first Decathlon season, he tried two Decathlons, but could finish only 9 events in both. In his second year he was much more sucessfull. He scored an Austrian under 17 record, and place 4th at the European Junior Championships.
In 1971 he had his international breakthrough, by scoring two World Junior records and placing 5th at the European Championships.
In 1972 he started at his first Olympic Games and placed 9th. In 1973 he scored his first +8000 score, but then needed 2 years to score over 8000 again.
He won the World University Games for three times and broke the World Record in the 30 minutes Decathlon in 1977, which was coverd life on the Austrian TV, because of the popularity of Sepp Zeilbauer and the Decathlon at this time in Austria.
With the new table he scored in 10 Decathlons over 8000 points, but most of them at the begin of the season in Götzis or Qualifiyings for the European Cup. So at the major championships like Olympic Games or European Championships he never won a medal, because he couldnīt repeat his good scores from the early season. His best was a 4th place at the European Championships and a 5th place at the Olympic Games.
In 1981 Zeilbauer finished his studies at the university and did his last Decathlon at the Austrian Championships.
Sepp Zeilbauer was one of the best Decathletes in the world in the 70ies and made the Decathlon very popular in Austria.
