Erwin Reiterer at the National Decathlon Championships 2000

Erwin Reiterer comes from a sporty family. His father Hans had a PR of 7,08m in the Long Jump, and was the Austrian Pentathlon Champion in 1951. His older brother Hannes has a Triple Jump PR of 15,37m.

With 15 years he did his first Decathlon. He also was a good Triple Jumper, he jumped 14,28m with 16 years. In 1987 he won the national under 18 Decathlon Championships. He also threw the 800g javelin to 61,58m in this year, and then concentrated on this event. In 1989 he qualified for the European Juniorchamionships in the Javelin and placed 13th there.

His PR he threw in 1991 with 74,86m, but he was not satisfied with his improvements in this event, so he picked up the Decathlon again. In the same year he trained with Andrejz Ptak for the Austrian Decathlon Championships, and was the surprising winner beating Alfred Stummer, who came very close to him with the 1500 meters.

In the next year he was the favorite, but lost at the Championships against his teammate Martin Krenn, who ran a PR in the 1500m and Erwin, leading until this event, ran a really bad race.

Because of injuries he was only  able for one time to start at the national indoor Heptathlon Championships. There he lead with 4282 points to 4165 to Gernot Kellermayr after the Hurdles. But Erwin broke his pole a few days before the meeting. So he jumped with the pole of Harald Eder, but he couldn´t handle it, and no highted. After this he paced for Kellermayr at the 1000m, who scored a NR at this meeting.

His last Decathlon Erwin did 1993 in Götzis, where he scored a PR with 7667 points. Many injuries ended his Decathlon career.

He still starts in single events, and surprised in 1998 by winning the national High Jump title.

In the indoorseason 2000 he tried again a Heptathlon, but he injured his back at a 2,02 High Jump clearence and had to give up after the hurdles. His marks: 7,40-6,70-13,60-2,02-8,51. At the outdoor championships he finished his first Deacthlon since 1993 and placed second with 6728 points. Later in the season, at the regional championships he started even better and was on a +7000 score, but couldn´t start at the second day because of an injury. After his problems with the back bothered him also in 2001, where he could not compete he retired from athletics.
