AUSTRIAN DECATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS 1999 (Kapfenberg 18./19. September)

The starterfield was not big, only 10 athletes picked up the decathlon. But 6 athletes had a PR over 7000 points before this decathlon. At the end 6 athletes finished, three of them with a new PR, and after the decathlon 7 athletes had a +7000 PR.

In the absence of Austrians new 8000 point athlete Thomas Tebbich, who was still injured after he had to give up at the World Championships, the way was free for the 1998 NCAA champion Klaus Ambrosch.
It was not an easy season for him. After a good indoor season (5808 points in the heptathlon), he injured his hamstring in a meeting before Götzis, where he had to give up after the first event.
He needed very long to recover, which costed a big lack of speedtraining. His comeback he in the middle of August at the military Championships (CISM) with 7185 points and the 4th place.
He went through the Decathlon with average results for him, but at the end he had a big PR in the Javelin and scored his second best non wind-assisted result with 7605. Because he starts now for a club in Salzburg it was a new regional record.
In the spring he decided to leave Arizona and come back to Austria, where he got a place at the HSNS (austrian army). He now is coached by Sepp Schmidl.
His old coach Horst Mandl could also be satisfied with this season, because he had with Thomas Tebbich his first +8000 athlete.

Behind Ambrosch it was a close finish for the places 2 and 3. Both Thomas Walser and Thomas Lorber had a new PR after the 1500. From the 1500 PRīs it wasnīt impossible for Lorber to get the 2nd place with a good race. He tried his best, but Walser had a good race, and at the end he was 16 points ahead of Lorber.

Thomas Lorber winning the PV with 4,70 meters, also a regional record for Kärnten

The younger brother of Thomas, Markus Walser also used the 1500 to make his first +7000 score, and overtake Heiko Mandl for the 4th place. The strong thrower Heiko didnīt care to much, and ran an easy 1500, just with the goal to score +7000 points.

The 6th placed Gerhard Zillner didnīt have to finish to 1500 to get the place, because the 7th placed at the moment couldnīt overtake him anymore, and gave up the decathlon.
Zillner was not anymore in the shape of the early season, where he did his first +7000 score.

At the Juniors in the absence of his rival Michael Schnallinger the goal for Roland Schwarzl, the 3rd of the European Juniorchampionships, was to break the austrian Juniorrekord of Sepp Zeilbauer.

He was on the route of his coach Sepp Schmidl until the pole vault, where he cleard only 4,60m. Also a PR in the Javelin wasnīt enough to get the missing points for a new record.
