Hubert König as national Coach
Hubert König started late with the Decathlon - in 1968 with
the age of 22 he was motivated by the good Austrian Trio
Mandl/Herunter/Diessl. All three of them qualified for the
Olympic Games in Mexico City. One of them - Horst Mandl became
his coach.
Hubert König improved quickly and became one of the best
Austrian Decathletes and Hurdlers. For the high hurdles he was
very talented, he competed in this event at the European Indoor
Championships twice (1972 and 1973)
To become a World Class Decathlete was difficult for him - he was
not very tall, and had poor throws (specially the Javelin) - in
1976 he thought he can never reach the World Class and stopped
training for the Decathlon.
He became then a Coach for the middle and lond distance runs. In
the 80ies he also was the national Coach for this events. His
wife Erika König-Zenz was a very good middle distance runner,
and won a few national titles. Later she became a Triathlete and
Hubert also moved to this event as a coach.
Later Hubert König was the sports-coordinator for the Austrian
Triathlon Federation.
He died at age of only 61 years in 2006.
