Austrian Team for the World Championships in Osaka

Günther Weidlinger, Andrea Mayr (3.000m SC) and Clemens Zeller (400m) nominated for Word Championships

At a press conference in Vienna on Tuesday, August 14, the Austrian Athletics Federation announced a team of three athletes to compete at the World Championships in Osaka.

Best known on the international scene is Günther Weidlinger in the Steeplechase who takes part in his fourth outdoor World Championships. With a season best of 8:15,35 minutes the 29-year old is one of the few European runners with good chances to qualify for the final. He has a 9th place from the World Championships in Seville 1999 and a 12th place from Helsinki 2005 to his credit and states to be in good shape after a high altitude training camp in St. Moritz in July.

Andrea Mayr (picture right) will run in the womens Steeplechase. The 28-year old doctor of medicine has clocked a national record of 9:48,87 minutes this year. Her achievements include a victory at the European Mountain Running Championships on home soil in Heiligenblut 2005 as well as at the World Mountain Running Trophy 2006 in Bursa (Turkey). However, this year she has focused on track running and has improved her PB’s at 1.500, 5.000 and 10.000 metres.

The third athlete on the team, Clemens Zeller, stepped at the international stage at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham earlier this year. In his first senior championships he managed to finish 6th place at the 400 metres in a personal best of 46,64 seconds. The 23-year old has improved further in the outdoor season and set an PB of 45,83 seconds in June. Clearly one of the promising characters in Austrian athletics, he hopes to qualify for the semi-final in Osaka.
