Veneva 202 world lead and tried for 209 - Holm is back with new meet record 237

BANSKA BYSTRICA, Feb 13: (later during the day we will have photos at meet website where the live results were posted and also at www.aktualne.sk under Europa SC High Jump meet section. All are free to use.)

Venelina Veneva jumped a world-leading 2.02 tonight to win the women’s competition at the Europa Shopping Center high jump competition in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. The Bulgarian jumper had decided only during the past weekend to compete at the 14th edition of this traditional winter high jump competition. The height of 2.02 equalled her own indoor personal best.

Veneva, who won the silver medal at last summer’s European Championships, ended the evening with three unsuccessful attempts at a would-be world-record 2.09. “Finally I was able to jump indoors two metres. I felt well, It was a great competition and very good preparation for Birmingham. I still have one more competition in Split on Feb 24. Why I went directly to world record? Yes, it is my dream to break the record. But I must admit I do like more 210, hopefully in future,” said Veneva.

Antonietta Di Martino was a surprising second in the competition, clearing 2.00 for the first time in her career and taking sole possession of the Italian national record, which had stood at 1.98 for thirteen years. “This is a dream come through. Great evening, I needed to fight at 197, but the third jump gave me a lot of confidence. At two metres I did what I wanted and again the bar was not touched,” said the Italian who after the record ended in tears.

Two marquee athletes finished third and fourth. Kajsa Bergqvist of Sweden, the world indoor record holder and two-time world indoor champion, had problems at 2.00, a height she has jumped indoors on twenty-two previous occasions. Her best of 1.97 earned third place. She missed with that her possible 50th jubilee over two metres competition. “I wanted to do more, but I still am not in the right shape. But it will come,” said Bergqvist.

In fourth place at 1.97 was last year’s winner here, Blanka Vlasic of Croatia. The silver medallist at last season’s World Indoor Championships, Vlasic surprisingly passed 2.00 before failing three times at 2.02. “It was a technical thing. I wanted so much, because I love the people here. We have tough training behind us and I hope the shape will be right in Birmingham,” said the Croatian. With Hellebaut passing the event and Slesarenko even not coming to Birmingham this four jumpers are likely to be the main contenders for medals at European Championships.

The “Banska Man” Stefan Holm had a great show before the packed hall (nearly 1200 spectators) and went smoothly over all bars including his jubilee 100th 230 at a meeting. The public had signs prepared Holm 100 and also he himself had in his bag a special t-shirt celebrating the jubilee jump. But that was only start of something special. Also world indoor champion Yaroslav Rybakov clearly jumped over 230. Both then went on second try over 233. This height was the last for two other jumpers. Cuban Victor Moya was great until 230 (all at first), but 233 was a barrier for him he did not managed. The full hall exploded when local jumper Peter Horak first time in his career in second attempt cleared 230 as only second Slovak in the history. He then attacked new national record of 233. “That was my evening, my dream to break 230 is fulfilled, hopefully I will not wake up,” said Horak who went over that bar clearly. After that the favourite duo battled for first place. Holm did 235 right at first and Rybakov decided to pass. The Swede gave the public what they wanted when he cleared the new meet record of 237. The event was climaxing, the level of support was at the highest point. Rybakov after first unsuccesfull attempt saved his other two jumps for 239. Both had two tries, but bar always felt down. As it was clear that Holm is the winner he gave to the public one try at 241. And even he did not jumped and just went under the bar it was end of again some very special high jump evening. “It was great, I love Banska. I was thinking maybe 233 would be a possibility. Then 235 was great and 237 is really something special. I waited for such a jump for two years. I am back and full of expectations towards Birmingham. I must come back next year and break the 240 here,” said Holm who as first jumper was able to win the event for third time (before that in 2003 and 2004). It was his second best indoor mark ever after 240 from Madrid 2005. He also jumped 237 back in 2004 at Stockholm Indoor meet. Outdoors his best is 236 cm.

Isinbayeva this time without WR, best try was the third one

BYDGOSZCZ (Feb 14): At Polish indoor jumping meet „Pedros Cup“ (EAA Permit) Yelena Isinbayeva continued to compete in her excellent shape, but it was not a world record evening. She had three tries at new record height 494, but all failures. She started at 464 in first and then had one failure at 474 and passed remaining two jumps to go in first over 484. Her best try at would-be world record was the third. „Only little bit of more dynamic run-up was missed in this last jump. Last three-four steps I should be more aggresive. I was close. I still had in my head special memories from Saturday in Donyetsk. I wanted to give new record today to my fans in Bydgoszcz, this is a good place for me, I won here my first international title in 1999 at World Youth Championships. Now I must save the record for September in Warszawa when I want come back to Poland,“she said after her win. She still has two competitions left during the indoor season, next is already this Saturday in Birmingham and the last on Friday Feb 23 in Paris. In her career she has so far 20 world records (11 out and 9 indoors), so she is aiming for the 10th jubilee under cover global mark. Nearly 6000 spectators came into the packed hall specially to see her, many were left outside. The world record bonus of 30 000 Euro remained untouched. Svetlana Feofanova is back to high heights. She jumped 474 in second and was for a moment leading the competition. Last time she had similar results was back in 2004. Local favourite Anna Rogowska did 464 as Czech Pavla Rybova and that was new national record. But only for maybe not even two hours because Katerina Badurova jumped at Prague Pole Vault even better with 465 cm.

In men´s high jump Sweden´s Linus Thornblad equalled his best in his first jump over 234. World champion Yuri Krimarenko from Ukraine was also in excellent shape achieving in third try new best of 234 (so far 233 out and 231 in). For both 236 was then too high. But the Swede had better tries, he lost his duel on paper with Stefan Holm who jumped on Tuesday in Banska Bystrica 237 cm. It was also special for Thornblad as his coach Stanislaw Szczerba is from Poland. US Champion Tora Harris was third with 230, the same height as Russian silver medallist from last years World Indoor Championships Andrey Tereshin who was fourth.

Badurova is the new record holder

PRAHA (Feb 14): The spectators in the Stromovka Hall knew that just before the competition started Pavla Rybova achieved in Poland new national record 464 cm. But her younger training partner Katerina Badurova (24 years, both coached by Boleslav Patera) changed everything in less than two hours. At the Prague Pole Vault she jumped in excellent mood and achieved 450 and 460 in second attempts. The latter one was her new best, last Saturday in Valencia she did 456. But that was not enough. Already in first attempt she went over 465 and that meant new national record. The Athens Olympic Games finalist will be for first time in senior czech record books. She gave for the crowd three good attempts at 470 cm. The Czech duo is now belonging to the elite group of Birmingham favourites. In the men competition experienced Jeff Hartwig jumped in first 560 and that was enough for a win. Best local man Adam Ptacek went over that height too, but in third attempt. First time since his return from South Africa and after his javelin accident Roman Sebrle competed and jumped 470 cm. „I am satisfied, my arm was ok. On Sunday I will compete in Belfast in shot put, 60mHurdles and 200 m. I am on the right way towards Birmingham,“ he said.
