Vlasic 201 new world lead in Romania

BUCURESTI: The 2nd Monica Iagar Grand Prix international high jump meet was again a huge success. Around 2000 spectators, television coverage and mainly new world lead by Blanka Vlasic were the higlights. The Croatian world indoor silver medallist had a great competition. She jumped only three times (185, 189 and 195 all in first) before coming to 201 and this height she mastered in second attempt and tried for 203. Her next competition is the favourite place in Banska Bystrica Slovakia on Tuesday (last year 205 there). Also european silver medallist Venelina Veneva from Bulgaria was jumping in excellent shape with all heights including 198 in first and only 201 was too high for her this evening. But the third one Antoinetta di Martino from Italy also had a great competition with all heights until 195 at first and then 198 in second. With that she equalled the national indoor record of Antonella Bevilacqua in 1994. Also best local jumper Oana Pantelimon showed great progress and jumped 195 in second attempt. Men competition was also very interesting. Cuban Helsinki silver medallist Victor Moya jumped clearly over 230 and it looked like he can go higher, but at 232 he again made technical mistakes. But he definitely had the jumping ability. Italian Andrea Bettinelli equalled his indoor best with jumping 230 in first. Polands Grzegorz Sposob jumped his seasonal best 228 for third place. Surprise of the evening was the Belgian Stijn Stroobants who bettered his best by 3 cm to 225 cm.
