WEINHEIM: Tomas Janku showed no signs of tiredness and won after Brno on Tuesday also the Hochsprung-Gala indoor meet in Weinheim, Germany on Wednesday late-evening. But this time he was not alone with new german best jumper Heike Onnen. Both had similar jumping record until 230, the Onnen three times tried 232 and Janku went directly to his new PB height 235. But after one miss he claimed that h eis too tired and passed the remaining two attemps. A jump-off was needed to have the winner. Both jumpers did not made 230 and stopped afterwards. Meeting manager Gunther Eisinger explains: „Both were really tired. Onnen drove by car some hours to the meet, Janku competed the day before so we agreed with the jumpers and announced two winners.“ US champion Tora Harris was third with 224. Strong showing by Asian Games winner Jean-Claude Rabbath from Lebanon who achieved new indoor national record 224 and even had good jumps at 227. Women´s competition was a big show by olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko from Russia. She jumped 195 and tried for 197. New best by second placed german athlete Ariane Friedrich. Packed hall by 1500 spectators were satisfied.

Bartels no Birmingham

DUSSELDORF: Gustav Schwenk reports that european champion Ralf Bartels will compete at National Championships during the week on Feb 17 and 18 but has no plans to fight for medals in Birmingham at European Championships. He was married in December, he came to Dusseldorf meet from ski holidays and went back. Because of the lack of shape or injurie of other putters he will aim for the national title. But in his plans he never was focusing on European indoors.

Giulio Ciotti injured

BRNO: After his Tuesdays competition in Brno the Italian elite jumper Giulio Ciotti injured himself. He afterwards cancelled his next two meetings in Bucuresti (Friday) and Banska Bystrica (Tuesday). No informations are available about his status concerning the whole indoor season. He finished 6th with 223 in Brno.

Russian plans


MOSKVA: Russian head-coach Valeriy Kulichenko announced for russian media the plan for Birmingham just before the national championships which are beginning on Friday in Volgograd. He plans that 75 athletes will compete, the team should win 15 medals and 4 of them gold. He expects mainly the young generation to fight for Birmingham team spots. Some of the topstars are not doing indoor season or are competing with no focus on European Indoor Championships. In this group are for example Yuriy Borzakovskiy, Tatyana Kotova or athletes who are competing at meetings but no plans for Birmingham (Yelena Isinbayeva, Lyudmila Kolchanova, Anna Pyatykh, Andrey Silnov, Yaroslav Rybakov and Andrey Yepishin). Also Tatiana Lebedeva and Yelena Slesarenko are scheduled to compete at meetings during the championships. But both of them might go to England.
