Defar record, but Melkamu what a surprise

STUTTGART: This meet was widely covered by all means – from my side just few notes. Meseret Defar was running the 3000 m even better than her outdoor best 8:24.66 last year in Stockholm. Meselech Melkamu was the sensation of the evening – her best before was 8:34.73 in Zurich, 2005. Is the time coming to first ever non-chinese under 8:20 races? This two indoor results are showing yes. Non-chinese only 6 faster times are registered outdoors than Defar on Saturday indoors.
Apart of the world record in total 10 season world bests were registered (60 m men twice, 800 m, 1500 m, 3000 m, 60mH, PV, wom – 60 m, 800 m, 60mH). Tilastopaja confirms also 6 national indoor records (Tahri 3000 m, L. Jones 60 and 400 m, Pavey and Chojecka 3000 m, Savigne LJ).

In the scoring the meet achieved 36 082 (top 3 in 10 best events) and that is more than last year (35 699). It will be tough for other meets to be better.

CHAPEL HILL: A 24 metres weight throw is always very good. That is also the case for Amber Campbell, she did 24.13 what means, she was short only by 7 cm to her best 24.20 from January in Landover. So far in history of this event only 5 throwers passed the 24 metres barrier.

Veneva beats Hellebaut at home

GENT: Great battle in female high jump was the highlight of the traditional IAAF Permit called „KBC Indoor“ in Gent, Belgium. The order between European Champion and local hero Tia Hellebaut and silver medallist from Goteborg Venelina Veneva was changed constantly. At 188 Hellebaut made a mistake so Veneva was leading, but then she needed three tries at 192 and Hellebaut was back because she made 192 in first. Veneva came back jumping 195 and 198 at first and Hellebaut both heights only on third. While Veneva in lead both jumpers had three unsuccesfull attempts at new world lead 201 cm. There was plenty of interesting action in running events with solid winning times by African runners (Kombich at 800 m, G. Rono at 1500 m, Moustaoui at 3000 m), only women´s 1500 m had an european winner as Helen Clitheroe,GBR was the best 4:09.28. Men´s pole vault was dominated by current European indoor champion Igor Pavlov from Russia who mastered 576 in second attempt. Ukrainian Oleksandr Korchmyd was second 571 cm.Sprinting was also dramatic. Nigerian Josephine Onyia won the 60m Hurdles in her first competition of the season in very good 7.99. British Jeanette Kwakye won the 60 m flat running seasonal best of 7.27. Grande dame of sprints Merlene Ottey (Slovenia) already in heats (7.40) and then in finals (as fourth) bettered the masters 45+ world indoor record to unbelievable 7.36. In the men sprints Kael Becerra from Chile won and achieved new national record 6.62.

Harlan had a great shot put on Saturday 16.51 and very good high jump 210 and was leading after first day. He was also best on Sunday at 60 m Hurdles 7.95 and his margin was even bigger. Young belorussian Andrey Krauchanka tried to make it in final event (he ran 2:42.74 at 1000 m) but remained second in new personal best. Other news

SEMPETER (SLO): National record holder in high jump Rozle Prezelj started the season well. At local indoor meet he achieved 222 cm and so fulfilled the standard for Birmingham. There are no standards from EAA, each national federation has its own ones.

SAMARA (RUS): Cuban-born elite triple jumper Yamile Aldama who is now representing Sudan injured herself during the meet in Samara, Russia. In second round she torned her muscle and needs to stop for two weeks. So she is out from Tuesday´s Dusseldorf meet which is the only one from IAAF or EAA permits now having this event in the programme.
