Devers quick at 40, Isinbayeva tried WR, Dibaba excellent at short bends

NEW YORK: The 100th jubilee celebration before 14 905 spectators as USATF reports was a great success. Millrose Games had many higlights on Friday Night in Big Apple in legendary Madison Square Garden. Although no world record was registered, two meet records and three world leaders were a nice summary. For european circumstances all races on 146 m oval are something special. From this point of view the time of Tirunesh Dibaba 8:46.58 at 3000 m is just great and is also new meet record (but it should be said, this event was not contested before). Her next race will be another 3000 m in Birmingham. Additionally it should be noted in MSG back in 1990 Lynn Jennings at national championships ran 8:40.45. Bernard Lagat got his fifth Wanamaker Mile title and beat in-form Craig Mottram from Australia by 0.55 s (still PB for him). Alan Webb was distant fourth. In sprints the sensation was called Gail Devers. Without any races since Olympic Games in Athens (only one outing also at Millrose 8.13 last year) after birth of a daughter she was able to run a new world lead and also masters WR 40+ with excellent 7.86. The quality of the time is supported by fact that only three quicker results were set last season. In the quote published by USATF she is saying about the future: „I have absolutely no plans [for the rest of the season]. I was doing ballet with my daughter earlier today in her little tutu, so I'll go back and do that. I don't have any more plans. This is the one race I said I would run, the 100th Millrose Games. I suppose if somebody calls and says I have to have you in this race, and if the money was right, I would probably do it.“ In total four runners went under 8 seconds.

Olympic 200 m champion Shawn Crawford confirmed his leading position in the season with another win this time 0.01 slower than his season best at 60 metres. Maurice Greene in his comeback fell at 25 m and jogged into the finish in 27.70 s. But all the reports are saying at that time he was leading the field.

World leader 2006 Christian Cantwell spoiled the party of Reese Hoffa who is sponsored by New York AC. Hoffa did 21.50 and 21.75, but that was not enough to Cantwell´s second round effort 21.88. They will next time meet in Valencia next Saturday. The throwers had 4 attempts. Russian Pole Vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva started well her first ever US appearance clearing 463 and 473 in first and then 482 in second. That meant not only a world leading mark but also US all comers record in or outdoors. It is the best mark ever outsider Europe. She tried for the 20th world record 492 but no success. Next time in Donyetsk at Sergey Bubka meet on Saturday (Feb 10) she will have no longer battle with time zones as she said afterwards. Men also tried for a new world lead 588 but US Brad Walker and Australian Steven Hooker were not succesfull. The decision was made on count-back, Walker jumped 580 at first and Hooker in second.

Oriala beats Nagel in Praha

PRAHA: High quality 60 m race was the highlight at the Olymp Grand Prix International Meet on Saturday in Otakar Jandera Hall in Prague part Stromovka. Chinedu Oriala from Nigeria beat by 0.01 South African Morne Nagel 6.65 and 6.66. Nagel later lost also the 200 m with 21.23 to the best Czech sprinter Jiri Vojtik who was able to run 21.13. Another higlight was the hurdles sprint where Andy Turner from Great Britain won setting a new PB 7.63. Second placed Petr Svoboda also ran his new best for first time in his career under 7.70 with 7.66. Third placed Stanislav Sajdok just came from tough training camp in South Africa on Friday so he was still feeling the long trip, but his time will come. Both pole vault competitions had wins for Poland. Roza Kasprzak jumped 435 as Czech Katerina Badurova but on first and the home girl on second. Kasprzak then tried her new best 448 and Badurova went even higher for 453 but none of the attempts had an positive outcome. Both afterwards tried for Birmingham standard 560 and were not succesfull as was not Kolasa at 570 cm (would mean equalling his best). The comeback of 1999 World Indoor and Outdoor Champion Ludmila Formanova did not had an positive result as she due to slight hamstring strain was forced to stop the race 2 laps before the finish. At that time she was in the leading pack behind the pacemaker.

Junior Pole Vault records

PENZA (RUS): At Russian indoor junior championships the 18 years old Leonid Kivalov from Stavropol achieved new world junior indoor best in Pole Vault. He jumped 567 cm and bettered the former best held by another Russian Artyom Kuptsov by 1 cm (Donyetsk, Feb 16 2003). Kivalov is the bronze medal winner at World Junior Championships 2006 in China.

BRATISLAVA (SVK): Czech talent Jan Kudlicka jumped national junior record in pole vault getting over 541 cm and so bettered the previous mark of Adam Ptacek (540 in 1998). It was at Moravia regional championships which were held in Bratislava, Slovakia because in the Moravian part of Czech Republic there is no hall with 200 m track. Kudlicka was 5th last year in Beijing finals.

Rybakov 238 and surprisingly Chicherova 198 in Arnstadt

ARNSTADT: The High Jump 31st international indoor meet „Hochsprung mit Musik“ in Arnstadt again brough something special. The favourites did not win this time. World indoor champion Yaroslav Rybakov had his day after loosing to Ukhov in Moscow and went over 238 in second attempt and so bettered the meet record by one cm (set by himself and Ivan Ukhov last year). He also equalled his best from Stockholm and Madrid 2005 (both indoors). He had also very good tries at 241 cm. „Everything went according to the plan. Finally I was able to jump technically well. I was very close at 241,“ said Rybakov after the meet. World leader Ivan Ukhov was only 4th with 231, but european champion recovered after his poor result on Wednesday in Goteborg. Andrey Silnov jumped 236 and so bettered his indoor best by one cm (outdoors he has 237). Olympic champion Stefan Holm made his 99th competition over 230 and again bettered his this years best to 234. He could have his 100th meet over 230 in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia on Feb 13 when he will meet again with Rybakov. Because he was not good on countback (not jumping 225 and 234 at first) he passed 236 and tried for 238. Also Silnov tried three times 238.
The female winner recovered from poor result during the week. Anna Chicherova from Russia who did on Wednesday in Cottbus only 184 as last jumped in second 198 and that was enough for win. This time with her coach Yevgeniy Zagorulko she was far better than in Cottbus. She also tried for new seasonal best of 201 cm. All three favourites Kajsa Bergqvist, Blanka Vlasic and Yelena Slesarenko mastered 195 and failed at 198. It should be said that all three had very close misses at 198. Canadian Nicole Forrester also jumped 195 and that means new overall best for her (so far 194 out and 193 indoors). It was for first time since 2001 that the winning mark was not at least 2 metres.
