Beitia wins 196 and Ecker with Otto jump world lead 582

COTTBUS: 5th International jumping meeting in Cottbus in the LausitzArena had as usual two events in the programme. The spectators were satisfied as at the end German jumpers achieved new world lead in pole vault. Danny Ecker jumped 582 in second and Bjorn Otto in third. The second one equalled so his indoor best. Before that height Otto was better with clean sheet, Ecker needed two attempts at his previous heights 550 and 570. At next height 587 only Otto tried twice, Ecker saved energy for next meetings. Helsinki World Champion Rens Blom from Holland is slowly returning, this time he managed 550 and was not succesfull at 560. Ruth Beitia from Spain was clear winner of women high jump competition as only she managed to went over 196 cm in second attempt. She is better in every competition (so far 190 and 192) and missed only 198. Russian Viktoria Klyugina who for some time was the seasonal leader had a clean sheet at all heights and her failure came only at 196 and so finished second. Nicole Forrester from Canada had difficulties at 188 (third attempt), but then went over 192 in second and that meant third place. Only once in her career she jumped higher indoors with 193 back in 1999. She also tried her overall best 196 cm. Vlasic beats Bergqvist, Holm beats Thornblad, two world leads for Robles

GOTEBORG: Eurojump meet in Goteborgs Scandinavium Hall (well known by ice-hockey fans) was packed by record number of 7412 spectators. And this despite the absence of triple jump olympic champion Christian Olsson who decided in the morning not to jump due to a knee problem. The highlights were both high jump competitions, but before that Cuban Dayron Robles was the star. Already in heat he achieved new seasonal best of 7.57 and bettered it later in the finals with 7.49. It was his first life appearance in a meeting indoors, he first time ever ran indoors last year at Worlds in Moscow. Today he missed his best from Russia only by 0.03 s. European champion Susanna Kallur won as on Saturday in Glasgow flat and hurdles 60 m races. This time she was slower in both. Germany had despite a home meet in Cottbus a 1-2 in pole vault led by Tim Lobinger. Brendan Christian from Antigua competed for first time in Europe at all and registered a solid win in 6.68 at 60 metres. American triple jumpers headed the event in top 4 places – the best was Cuban Osniel Tosca with indoor best 16.95 (he first time ever competed indoors). Stefan Holm made his competition number 98 over 230 and this time won with 232 on count-back with his countrymate Linus Thornblad. They will next compete in Arnstadt on Saturday and then their ways be splitted. Holm will head to Banska Bystrica, Slovakia and Thornblad to Bydgoszcz, Poland. For Olympic Champion if succesfull over 230 in Germany could be the Slovakian place the happy 100th competition over 230 cm. European champion Andrey Silnov from Russia managed only 221. More drama was in women contest. Indoor world record holder Kajsa Bergqvist battled with Olympic Champion Yelena Slesarenko at 198, but none was succesfull. Croatia´s Blanka Vlasic was the third smiling, because she passed this height and went for two metres. And in third she did it – so she equalled the world lead of Tia Hellebaut and also the meet record of Kajsa Bergqvist from last year. She then tried 202 cm.

In total 2 new (Robles twice) and 2 equalled meet records (S. Kallur at 60 m, Vlasic) were registered.
