Veldakova sisters with two standards for Birmingham

BRATISLAVA, Jan 28 – The second IAAF development meet after Budapest brought on Sunday in Bratislava two standards for European Indoor Championships in Birmingham for Slovak Athletics. Home twin jumping sisters had their day. First Dana Veldakova achieved in second round of triple jump excellent 14.18 m. That was not only her third best mark of the career (last year 14.21 indoors and 14.19 outdoors) but also a current world lead. „It was my first competition of the season and as always I was little bit nervous. But we had great training in december at Grand Canaria and in january in Spala of Poland. I did not know what to expect. But I paid attention to my technique in second attempt and it went well,“ said Veldakova who also added a 14.04 in third round. Her sister Jana afterwards did the same in second round with 652 cm and fulfilled the standard of Slovak federation by 2 centimetres and it is also her indoor best. „I was able to put together my speed with technique, but there is plenty of space to be better,“ said Jana. Also slovak triple jumper Jaroslav Dobrovodsky made the headlines with bettering his best to 16.37 m. He is now second in Slovak all-time list behind Dmitrij Valukevic who is passing the indoor season. Also czech athletics had the luck of new standard for Birmingham. Petr Svoboda was the fastest at 60mHurdles already in first round with new personal best 7.78 and missed the standard only by 0.01 s. In second round he was again the best and this time with 7.74, he made the standard by 0.03 s and achieved another life time. „It was far from ideal technically, I have the feeling that I can run below 7.70, maybe next weekend in Praha,“ said Svoboda. Irish sprinter Anna Boyle was this time two times better than Bulgaria´s Magdalena Khristova with times 7.39 and 7.37 at 60 metres. Ezinne Okparaebo the 18-years old teenager from Norway got a new national junior indoor record 7.42. Excellent also the 16 years old Jennifer Taker from England with 7.49.

In the men sprints only one sub 6.70 was registered. In second round the winning time by Mark Findlay with 6.68. Simeon Williamson did not repeated his fast time from Budapest and was second in 6.70. Tim Abeyie got dq in first round and in second achieved 6.77.
