Vienna Indoor Classic as athletics betting starts

WIEN: Tuesday´s Vienna Indoor Classic indoor meet in Ferry Dusika hall has in its name also „Athleticbet.com“. New title sponsor of the third of development meets in Central Europe after Friday in Budapest and Sunday in Bratislava is a global betting website devoted only to athletics. Athleticbet.com is ran by Austrian agent Robert Wagner and working for the company is among others also Marton Gyulai, son of the late IAAF General Secretary. The organisers registered more than 600 entries from 25 countries. The programme is planned for 10 hours, every second minute a start is happening. The headliners are the world indoor record holder Jolanda Ceplak from Slovenia who will run 800 m. It will be her first competition of the year, she last time run 800 m indoors at European Championships in Madrid 2005. She is now totally healthy after problems she had in 2005 and 2006. „My aim is to show the best of me in Birmingham. I feel I am coming back where I was,“ she is saying. She returns to the site of her record and title back in 2002 at European Indoor Championships after great duel with the local runner Stephanie Graf. World and European indoor champion Jason Gardener (GBR) is also scheduled to run the 60 m after his loss on Saturday in Glasgow against Craig Pickering. Popular American Lolo Jones will contest 60 m Hurdles and everyoung Romanian Ionela Tirlea will start at 400 m. In middle distances some fast races are planned, with runners from European countries aiming for Birmingham standards. Slovenian record holder Marija Sestak will compete in triple jump and the world lead of Slovak girl Dana Veldakova 14.18 will be under threat.

Ottey ran world masters best

MOSCOW: One special result at Sunday´s Russian Winter Meet which was headlined by great male high jump should be mentioned. Super vet Merlene Ottey achieved in heats at 60 m a time of 7.54. She did not advanced into the finals, but the time is now world indoor record in masters category age 45+. Until now the record was not under 8 seconds. It is most likely that the current slovenian athlete will better this time during the indoor season.

Scerbova winning in Zaragoza

ZARAGOZA: Czech versatile talent Denisa Scerbova won on Sunday pentathlon in Spain during a five countries multi events match. She scored 4341 points, her second best result. She missed the new national record (her own mark 4392 in last year) in the shot put where she achieved only 10.76. Otherwise she was well on schedule with new personal best 8.36 at 60 m hurdles and very solid long jump 645 cm. Czech women won the match. On the men side the local boy Alvaro Contreras was the winner with 5773 points in heptathlon, team award went to France.

New best by Riley in WT

BLOOMINGTON (Indiana, USA): New world best was registered at Gladstein Invitational. Brittany Riley achieved in weight throw 24.57 m. It was better by 34 centimetres than the current best held by Erin Gilreath. She registered in the same hall 24.23 m on February 18 in 2005. Riley is only 20 years young and has hammer outdoor best of 66.30. With this result she was the winner at NACAC Champs U23 in Santo Domingo last year.

MADISON (USA): At Wisconsin Elite Invitational the sprinter Demi Omole was fast with 6.62 at 60 metres. More surprising was the winning 230 cm in high jump by Jim Dilling. The 21 years old student has outdoor best of 221, but last indoors he jumped already 229 cm. The best heptathlon score of the year was made by olympian Paul Terek with 5977, his individual results were 7.09 – 718 – 14.90 – 198 – 8.51 – 535 and 2:44.71.

GAINESVILLE (USA): At Florida Diet Pepsi Invitational another 230 cm jump was registered. The Bahamian Donald Thomas known as jumping very high without spikes went first time in his career over this height. Former Olympic champion Angelo Taylor (at 400mHurdles in 2000) was the best at 400 m with solid 46.57. French long jumper Salim Sdiri did in his first jump 801 cm and went as first this indoor season with a eight metres mark.

SEATTLE (USA): At Dempsey Indoor Facility (307 m long oval) the olympic and world gold medallist in relay Darold Williamson registered a loss against Alex Harcourt a unknown runner who until this indoor did not run under 47 seconds. He achieved new school record with 46.43, second Williamson was timed by 46.48 s.
