Athletics News - Asafa Powell runs 47.67

KINGSTON: The fastest man on earth Jamaican Asafa Powell achieved on Saturday new best at 400 m. He won his heat at Queen's/Grace Jackson Track Meet at the Stadium East Field in windy conditions with a time 47.67. Last year in same period (Jan 28) he achieved 48.28. Another member of the group MVP of coach Stephen Francis world leader last year at 100 m Sherone Simpson also won her heat with 53.40. Last year she was able to run in better conditions 53.24. Powell plans to run one more 400 m later in February.

Pavla Rybova achieved standard for Birmingham as did Katerina Badurova

OTROKOVICE/PRAHA: Czech female pole vaulters started the season well. They returned from training camp in Grand Canaria only Friday night and already on Saturday two of them fulfilled the standard for European Indoor Championships. At an international meet in Otrokovice former world indoor champion Pavla Rybova (formerly Hamackova, she married last autumn to former decathlete Jiri Ryba, his best 8339 in 2000, he is also her agent now) went over 435 cm and was satisfied. „I want to attack my national record in this indoor season,“ she said. Her national record is 457 since 2003. During the meet also the dutch high jumper Martijn Nuyens bettered his best to excellent 224 cm. He came to Czech republic with 216 and jumped in Hustopeče on Jan 20 220 and in Ostrava on Jan 23 again the same mark. On Saturday he went over 215 and then directly to 224 and this height he mastered in his third attempt. He fulfilled with it also the standard for European Indoor Championships.

At Prague Pole Vault championships (other events were held week before, but because the change of the hall pole vault was postponed) her training mate Katerina Badurova also did 435 on her second attempt and tried three times also 445 cm. Only the third member of training group of coach Boleslav Patera the younger Jirina Ptacnikova was missing with 422 and trying three times the 435 cm.
