Tomas Janku 232 cm in jump-off with Victor Moya

OSTRAVA, JAN 23 – Great men´s jumping was the highlight of the second leg of 3rd Moravia Daylong Tour High Jump series in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The site of summer Golden Spike IAAF Grand Prix Meeting and this year also IAAF World Youth Championships witnessed first a local win. Romana Dubnova who is competing for the Ostrava club SSK Vitkovice was clearly the best as she with big margin went over 192 in her second attempt. That meant also fulfilling of czech federation standard for European Indoor Championships in Birmingham. Yekaterina Kuntsevich and Marina Aitova who jumped in first part in Hustopece over 194 and 192 were this time technically not in shape and had very close attempts at 192. Dubnova after mastering the winning height was also very close at 195 and looks like a matter of time when she will do it. „It was wonderful, the public was great, very good jumping. I think I will go higher in next meetings,“ she explained. In Trinec at the final leg on Thursday she will have to beat Kuntsevich by 4 centimetres for the overall tour win.

Men were in better mood in late evening in packed Ostrava hall, witnessed by two great world record holders Jan Zelezny and Javier Sotomayor. Eleven went over 220 and 8 over 224. Even 227 was not a barrier as five jumped clearly over that bar. Both czechs Janku and Ton with this fulfilled the czech standard for Birmingham. But the real drama started at 230. First Janku and then Moya did it what was also a new meet record. In secound round Ton joined them and the poker started. First Ton said he is passing 232 because he was the worst on count-back and also 234 would mean his new overall best. After that also Janku realised that i tis better to pass the 232. Moya remained alone at 232. After two close jumps he saved the last one at 234. The atmosphere in the hall was electric and the the climax came with seven tries at 234 which would mean also new world best of the fresh season. Nobody did it, the closest was Janku should be said. And because he and the cuban had the same attempts before a jump-off came. For some spectators was it a surprise but they remained in the hall. First Janku did not made 234 as Moya afterwards. Due to rules next height was 232 and Janku did it – another meet record and his indoor best. Moya was not succesfull and then the great show was over. Happy spectators (mainly young children from sport schools) went home with great memories. „I felt great, i tis still start of the season so I am positively surprised. This indoor season is not a big goal for me, I just want compete and enjoy my jumping. Today I was able to put together my power with speed and technique,“ explained Janku. Winner of first leg Tereshin (233 world lead in Hustopece) had close misses at 230 and said afterwards that he was too tired. Cuban Moya showed his great potential and remains a big threat for all european meets he will contest. In the tour ranking he is currently leading after 224 and 230. Ton was also satisfied with a 230 at the begin of the season. „After long period of training already in a second meet a 230 is great and gives me a big motivation for the whole indoor campaign. And it was far from ideal technically,“ he explained. Current world champion Yuri Krimarenko from Ukraine competed for the first time since last early summer and had a very good jump at 227 and close misses at 230. „I am happy after such a long time with the result. The right feeling is still not there, but it will come,“ said Krimarenko.

The third leg of the tour on Thursday will be the 15th Beskydska latka in Trinec (only some 40 km from Ostrava). The fields should be added by Anna Chicherova from Russia and Grzegorz Sposob from Poland. Although organisers were worried about their arrivals due to the latest snow difficulties at the airports and roads in central Europe.
