Vlasic beats Veneva, Tereshin with new world lead 233 cm

HUSTOPECE, Jan 20 – The expectations were high and results according to the begin of the season. But some of the jumpers were already so early able to attack their personal bests. Most of the competitors at first leg of Moravia Daylong Tour in Hustopece (near Brno) in Czech Republic were competing for the first time this year. Packed hall with more than 1000 spectators was satisfied, although local stars could not jump into the top three. Best women equalled this years best and men winner achieved the best mark of the season.

Women competition was from the begin a great duel between two silver medal winners. Bulgarian Venelina Veneva second from Goteborg was flying high, but had technical difficulties with the right timing of the take-off. That is why she needed two attempts at 180 and 187 and even three at 192, but she went clearly over 194 and 196 at first. Then she had nice attempts at 198 and the last one she was far over the bar but touched it in the last phase of the jump. In the meanwhile her younger rival and silver medal winner from Moscow World Indoors Blanka Vlasic from Croatia saved energy and jumped every second height, but she also had her small crisis at 192 and did it at third. Then she mastered 196 on first and passed 198. From her three attempts at two metres the last one was a very close one. She was already on the landing pit when the bar went down. Pity, the organisers were hoping for the first ever two metres jump on czech soil indoors. Anyway, the reward was a new meet record of 196 by top two (former MR 195 by Olga Kaliturina,RUS back in 2005). Both elite jumpers came from hard training and so were actually satisfied with the results. „I m so tired after my training camp in Poland. That is why I tried to save my energy and passed some heights. Overall I am satisfied, it is only begin of the season, I have many meetings before me. And the two metres were so close,“ said Vlasic. Also Veneva was in good mood and returned straight after the meet to her training base in Budapest, Hungary. „I did not jumped at such a indoor jumping meet since 2002 and so it was something special for me. I had to fight with my technique and I think better results will come very soon,“explained the Bulgarian star. Both will next jump in Brussels on Jan 27. Surprise of the evening was the young russian Yekaterin Kuntsevich from Yekaterinburg. She jumped all heights including 194 (her new indoor best) on first and missed only at 196. It was the best women jumping in the history of the tour with four jumpers over 192 cm.

Russian world indoor silver medallist Andrey Tereshin saved the men´s competition. Eleven jumped over 220, but only six at 224 and only two at 227. Most of the jumpers were still trying to find the right approach and technique. There were some strategies included when Goteborg silver medallist Tomas Janku passed 224 and only very closely missed 227 and Helsinki silver medallist Victor Moya from Cuba after twice closely missing 227 saved his last jump at 230 and was again very close. The revelation of indoor season Slovak Peter Horak jumped 227 at first and that was already a guarantee of very high position. Spectators enjoyed the dramatic climax when Tereshin in his last attempt clearly mastered 230 and so was the winner, otherwise a jump-off between him and Horak would be needed. But the Russian from the group of coach Belov after two good jumps at 233 gave to the hall also this height on his last try. Only twice in his life he jumped better – last winter with 236 and 235 cm. He was so tired that he did not jumped more. „I am sorry, I cannot jump more. It was so tough. I need to save my energy for the second meet and I must be careful because I had a small injury recently and I started to feel something. Hopefully I will be able to jump in Ostrava on Tuesday,“ said the happy winner. In men B-competition also some good jumping happened Slovak Lubos Benko mastered 220 as the same did also Dutch jumper Martijn Nuyens and that was his personal best. Both then tried the standard for Birmingham 226 cm.

The tour is mooving to eastern part of the country to Ostrava, the site of Golden Spike IAAF Grand Prix Meeting and this year also World U17 Championships. The third „Ostravska latka“ will be held on Tuesday Jan 23 and men field will be added by world champion Yuri Krimarenko from Ukraine and women field by Helsinki medallist Emma Green from Sweden and Nicole Forrester from Canada. On the other hand Veneva and Vlasic as scheduled will be no more involved. Star guests in Ostrava will be two world record holders – Jan Zelezny and Javier Sotomayor. The tour winners will be established by counting all three results together and from those who will do all three meets the biggest chances are now with Horak and Kuntsevich. Tereshin is leaving the tour after Ostrava. In last leg in Trinec on Jan 25 two more quality jumpers will be included – current European Indoor champion Anna Chicherova from Russia and poland elite jumper Grzegorz Sposob.
