Athletics News from around the globe - 8.1.

MOSCOW (RUS): Agency allsport.ru reports that Mayor of City Yuriy Luzhkov promised to build two new stadiums for athletics in Moscow. First with capacity of 15 000 should be used more for competitions and is planned to be in part of the town called „Tekstilschiky“. Second one will be used more for preparation and training and should be located in Ismaylovo. This news are hot in connection with the planned site visit of IAAF group in Jan 20-22 in terms of Moscow´s bid for World Championships 2011 and 2013.

SAN SEBASTIAN (ESP): Spanish websites are reporting that Naora Agirre achieved new national record in pole vault. She jumped in San Sebastian 451 cm and so was even better than her outdoor national record 450 achieved last year in Saulheim, Germany. Her indoor record was also 450 from World Indoors in Moscow.

ATHENS (GRE): Greek websites are saying that triple jumper Hrysopyi Devetzi will not compete indoors 2007. She is going to concentrate on outdoor campaign with the main aim to be succesfull in Osaka. She won silvers in Goteborg last year and at Olympic Games in Athens.

FAIRFAX (USA): Mile star Alan Webb started indoor season with sub 4 minutes race. He won at Father Diamond Invitational clearly with 3:59.34. Second placed Sam Burley was well back in 4:09.58. Webb in his career only once was running quicker under cover. In 2004 in Fayetteville 3:57.52. He is scheduled to race at Boston Indoor Games later in the month again the mile. In women 60 m sprint local runner Muriellle Ahoure from George Mason achieved very solid 7.35 and beat clearly UK international Joice Maduaka (7.51).

BLOOMINGTON (USA): At Indiana Open Shane Crawford (unattached) won 60 m sprint with 6.75. He was seeded with 7.00 so made a big jump into international class. He is not to be confused with the 200 m Olympic Champion Shawn Crawford.

BATON ROUGE (USA): High school talent Bianca Knight was suprisingly beaten at LSU High School Classic. She was second in 55 metres race with 6,96, by 0.03 better was Victoria Jordan (6.93). Knight´s meet record from last year is 6.79.

HANOVER (USA): First part of 38th Dartmouth Relays brought a solid heptathlon by Mustafa Abdur-Rahim (best of 5744 from 2004) until his pole vault disaster where he no heighted. Even a 440 jump would made it nearly 5800 score. His individual results 60 m 6.91, Long Jump 696, Shot Put 14.30, High Jump 187, 60mH 8.04, PV NH, 1000 m 2:36.02. He anyway won the event with 5043 points.

HERZENBROCK (GER): At the indoor High Jump meet (4th annual) the dutch athlete Jan Peter Larsen won with a new meet record of 220 cm. Women´s competition winner was german athlete Kathryn Holinski with 177 cm. Larsen achieved all heights including 220 on his first and then three times failed at 224 cm. Better than Holinski was Kimberly Jess (born 1991) as winner of youth competition as she jumped 183 cm.

YEKATERINBURG (RUS): Top results by russian high jumpers at the EAA Meet „Christmas Starts“. Ivan Ukhov won the men competition with 230 cm. European Champion and number one ranked Andrey Silnov was only second with 224 cm. In women´s competition top two went over 196 cm. Better on countback was Viktoria Slivka, the 1999 European Junior Champion who last time was jumping back in 2004. She bettered her best by 2 cm. Second European Indoor Champion Anna Chicherova, but also a not bad start into the season. Yekaterina Kuntsevich as third again bettered her indoor best to 192 cm. As rusathletics.com reports Irina Khabarova won 60 m in solid time of 7.24. Spanish federation website adds that European Champion Francisco Fernandez was third in the 5000 m walk in 18:39 what means new national best. The management of Fernandez issued following results of the walk: 1. Aleksandr Yargurkin 18:30, 2. Ivan Kuznetsov 18:33, 3. Francisco Fernandez 18:39, 4. Ilya Markov 18:56.

CLERMONT-FERRAND (FRA): At L´Equipe site pretty fast 60 m of former European Champion Muriel Hurtis is mentioned. At a national meet in Clermont-Ferrand (Aubiere) she achieved in heats 7.32 and in finals 7.33. Last year she started the season with 7.47, so it looks like a better shape than in 2006 which was her first year after birth of the child. Her best from 2003 is 7.09.
