Three latest doping cases – Velter nearly made no promotion for Belgium

Three lates doping cases announced by IAAF this week are on a higher level and with interesting conclusions.

Positive tested was at out of competition test in Ifrane (MAR) on June 14 the asian junior record holder in steeple Musa Amer Obaid, QAT (8:07.18 in 2004, until end of 2003 Moses Kimutai, KEN). That means his two results (7th in Linz and 5th in Brussels – 8:23.53 and 8:14.70) will be deleted and other runners will moove in the results order at this meetings. For Brussels the runners initially below him will now get more prize money as they expected. More interesting is also, that he will miss the possibility to compete at Beijing Olympics as his ban expires on Sep 12, 2008.

Belarus female winner of the marathon in Duluth, USA (June 17) Halina Karnatsevich from BLR was at that marathon tested positive for stanozolol. Her ban expires on July 20, 2008. She will be of course deleted from the results lists, initially winning with 2:33:39. The 36 year old runner has a best of 2:27:14 from last years World Championships in Helsinki.

Third case is the most interesting. Belgian jumper Michael Velter was disqualified for cannabis at the meet in Braschaat on June 3 (second with 789 cm in long jump). But his three months ban started only on Oct 19 and will end on January 18, 2007. When it would be since June 3 Belgium would be not qualified for the Super League 2007. Because at European Cup First League in Praha later in June he won long jump and was second in triple jump. If this points would be deleted Belgium would be third with only 105 points. The winner would be Sweden (116) and so promoted to Super League, Czech Republic would be second with 106 points.
