Five Kenyans in Breclav

BRECLAV: The best road mile race in Czech Republic called „Breclavska Mizuno Mile“ will have this Saturday the best fields in the third edition of the event. In total more than 500 runners are expected to compete in all categories. The 1609 m course over the bridge in city of Breclav (south west of the country very close to the boarder with Austria and Slovakia) makes this a very interesting opportunity during the St.Wentzels festivities which are bringing many visitors to the town. This year for first time african runners are coming and they are also the favourites of the races. In the elite men race more than 30 runners are expected to compete. Kenyan contingent of five runners is headed by steeple talents and junior world medalists Bisluke Kiplagat Kipkorir and Ronald Kipchumba. Other runners are Isaac Tanui, Erich Chirchir and Samwel Kwalya. They will face oppostion from Spain (Angel Velasco Garcia) and Italy (Domenico Ricatti). Polish duo Ireneusz Sekretarski and Rafal Snochowski will try to repeat last years win of their countrymate Marcin Fudalej. Three solid runners are coming from Ukraine. Talented junior Volodymyr Kyts with Serhiy Shyyanovsky and Vasyl Tsikalo. All of this names are track runners between 3:37-3:42 so a clear favourite is not on hand. Women elite field with more than 15 runners is having the favourite in Hungarian distance runner Krisztina Papp. She was 8th at European Championships in Goteborg at 5000 m and also represented Europe at World Cup in Athens at 3000 m. Whether she will be enough quick to defeat two strong Africans remains a question. Beatrice Jepchumba from Kenya was 6th this year at World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka in the milers event. Morrocan Ibtissam Lakhouad was the winner at international meeting end of July in Nurnberg, Germany and bettered her best this year to 4:08.22. Interesting addition to the field is the olympic games rowing 4th placer and vice-world champion Miroslava Knapkova from Czech Republic who is running after her rowing season on the track and roads. Early september she achieved on the track 4:37.64 at 1500 m. The event will have also some prominent starters like former world champion Ludmila Formanova, hurdler star Jiri Muzik and winner of first edition and best czech miler Michal Sneberger, who is not able to run because he underwent early in the week an achilles surgery to be ready for next indoor season.

Kenya vs. Europe in Kosice

KOSICE: In the history of International Peace Marathon in Kosice (started in 1924) there are currently 243 men times under 2:20 and 149 women times under 3 hours. For the 83rd edition of the oldest marathon in Europe for Sunday the weather forecast shows little bit too high temperatures. The weather in central Europe is currently very warm, similarly as experienced last Sunday in Berlin. In different races organisers are hoping for 3000 participants in total from 32 countries. For marathon more than 1000 runners are expected. Increased interest is coming from runners who were originally scheduled to race the same day in Budapest, but the Hungarian event was postoponed due to current political situation in the country. The main aim in elite races is to try to break the 2:12 bareer. The course is not slow as it was confirmed back in 1997 at World Half marathon championships so far the only edition with sub one hour times. So far the course record is 2:12:35 achieved by Poland´s Adam Dobrzynski in 2004. Last year due to high temperatures David Maiyo from Kenya achieved only 2:16:07. He is coming again, but seven other country mates are going to run too. So far in the history of the event four times the winner was a Kenyan. Everything looks like the fifth will come this weekend. But it should be an interesting fight between 8 Kenyans and 8 solid quality runners from Europe. Apart of Maiyo also Augustus Kavutu with best of 2:11:39 (achieved in Dubai 2005), John Ngeno (2:12:16) and Edwin Kipchom (2:13:03) should be noted. Russian Dmitriy Burmakin (2:11:19 in Zurich 2005), Belorussian Vladimir Tsiamtchyk (2:11:38) and Ukrainian runner Myhalo Iveruk (2:12:32 this year in Hamburg) are the hot names on the european side. Iveruk was last year one of the pacemakers. Interesting could be polish runner Maciej Mereczko who debuted in spring in Austin with 2:14:16. Traditionally UK runners are going to compete – on the men side Nigel Leighton and Ian Fisher, on the women side Holly May. Women category has other five elite names headed by defending champion Edyta Lewandowska from Poland (2:34:18). Other favourites are Valentina Delion from Moldavia (2:36:50) and Russian Yelena Shubareva who will after halfmarathon time of 1:12:53 have her debut. Local runner Marcel Matanin is the main favourite for the national title which is also on stake. Former prime minister and keen marathon runner Mikulas Dzurinda should be this time a guest, after his car accident he will be most probably able to race again next year.
