Lysenko vs. Moreno for the first time of the year |
BANSKA BYSTRICA/DUBNICA: Slovak EAA permit meetings „Athletics Bridge“ to be held on Aug 27 in Banska Bystrica and Aug 29 in Dubnica are building a nice hammer tradition. Also for the upcoming 4th edition the best possible fields in this events are assembled. In women contest all three medallists from Goteborg will compete with best overseas throwers from Cuba. Russian world record holder Tatyana Lysenko will for the first time this season meet with former double world champion and last year Helsinki silver medallist Yipsi Moreno from Cuba. Her last world record 77.80 from Tallinn and also great throws in Birmingham are opening some expectations also for Slovakian events. The organiser even prepared a car (KIA) as bonus for possible global mark. But Moreno wants also throw a decent mark, also because she is the meet record holder with 74.95 since last year. In 2005 she beat twice Lysenko in Slovakia and got a share from the jackpot. Also in the field is another world record holder Gulfiya Khanafeyeva from Russia. The two meets have same starting fields and the athletes are fighting for the total jackpot of 14 000 E in 14 events. All double winners will share the amount, last year there were 9 such athletes. Men´s hammer competition has the same high quality field headed by current world and european champion Ivan Tikhon from Belarus. His main rivals will be the world leader and bronze medal winner from Goteborg and his country-mate Vadim Deviatovskiy. Also in the field are other four European finalists (5. Ziolkowski, 6. Pars, 7. Kozmus, 11. Lingua). Weather permitted, organiser are hoping for first 83 metres throw of the year. In total 10 medallists from Gothenburg will be competing. The world best is scheduled to show his abilities in men shot put contest – American Christian Cantwell is having his last warm-up competitions before World Athletics Final in Slovakia. At the second place in Dubnica the organisers even enlarged the shot put area because before only throws up to 21,50-21,80 were possible. In the jumping area one of the most consistent triplers (medals from Athens, Helsinki and Goteborg) Marian Oprea from Romania will come. His shot will be at meet record of 17.30 achieved last year by world champion Walter Davis (USA). High jumpers will be aiming for breaking 230 cm for the first time at the bridge – the candidates World indoor championships silver medallist Andrey Tereshin from Russia, olympic finalist Svatoslav Ton from Czech Republic and national record holders of Slovenia (Rozle Prezelj) and Brasil (Jesse de Lima). Women´s pole vault will be contested for the first time and four high quality jumpers will aim for the best result ever at slovak territory (so far 451 by Daniela Bartova back in 1998). Russian Yulia Golubchikova, German Nastja Ryshich, Hungarian record holder Krisztina Molnar and czech Helsinki bronze medallist Pavla Hamackova are the hottest favourites.
In the sprints section a strong group of US and Caribbean sprinters will fight for the jackpot along with the European bronze medallist Matic Osovnikar from Slovenia. Former relay world champion Darvis Patton from USA, Helsinki bronze medallist in relay Jacey Harper from Trinidad und this years third at US Championships Rod Martin are the biggest favourites. Not to forget the bahamian record holder Derrick Atkins, who achieved this season 10.08. At 400 m three athletes with sub 45 seconds bests will be starting – Americans Jamal Ashley and Mitch Potter along with Ato Modibo from Trinidad. Poland´s relay bronze medallists from Goteborg Piotr Marciniszyn and Piotr Rysiukiewicz will also be factors. Very strong also men hurdles sprint with four Americans with bests between 13.22 and 13.31 – Joel Brown, David Oliver, Ron Bramlett and Aubrey Herring. Mateus Inocencio from Brasil and Williams Sharman from Great Britain are completing a superb field. Women hurdles will have as the strongest jackpot contender American Lolo Jones who is number six in the current world lists with 12.56. Women sprint will have the ever young sprint queen competing. Merlene Ottey is hoping for another world bests in category 45+. But for jackpot she will have it tough with Central American Games winner Roxana Diaz from Cuba and two Goteborg 200 m finalists Yekaterina Kondratyeva from Russia and Angela Morosanu from Romania. Two middle distances are open affairs. At men 800 m races Kenyans Elijah Boit and Cosmas Rono along with Samwel Mwera from Tansania and American Jebreh Harris are the contenders for jackpot. Local crowds will be hoping for homer runner Jozef Repcik (semifinals in Goteborg and winner Thursday in Copenhagen) to mix the cards. Men steeple will have Bisluke Kiplagat, Isaac Tanui and Collins Ngeno from Kenyan Armada as main contenders for the jackpot.
Time table for both events is pretty the same. The hammer competitions are starting at 5 pm (at main stadiums where first league soccer is played!), opening ceremonies at 6.45 pm and both events ending by 9 pm. Live results to be found at www.saz.sk (slovak athletics federation website).
