Lysenko throws world record 77.80

TALLINN, Aug 15 – The EAA Premium Meeting „Tallinn 2006“ in Estonia started in nice summer weather (temperatures around 22-23 degrees) with something special. Fresh European Champion Tatyana Lysenko from Russia achieved in her first competition after Goteborg new world record of 77.80 m in hammer throw. She bettered her own global mark from Znamenskiy Memorial (Zhukovskiy near Moscow on June 24, 2006) by 39 centimetres (77.41 m). It is her third world record of the career, she achieved the mark in the fifth round. Second was another Russian Yekaterina Khorosikh with 73.46 (she did not qualify for the finals in Goteborg) and third and fourth place went to other European medallists but in reverse order. Third was Kamila Skolimowska from Poland and fourth Gulfia Khanafeyeva from Russia. Lysenko achieved in her series also 2 marks over 76 metres and that confirmes her excellent shape.

Later during the event at the Kadriorg Stadium in Estonian Capitol the fresh European Champion Virgilijus Alekna from Lithuania continued his winning series. But it was not that easy as silver medallist from Goteborg Gerd Kanter from Estonia started the competition well in second round with 67.86 m. Alekna in fifth only equalled that mark, but was behind with second best (67,31 to 67,49). He saved his winning streak in last effort with an massive improvement to 69,30 m. He extended so his winning series to 19 finals since last year (Aug 16) Tallinn Meeting where he lost to Frantz Kruger from South Africa.

World leader Christian Cantwell from USA also confirmed that he returned to Europe after break in excellent shape. His fifth and sixth throw worth 21.40 and 21.75 were enough for clear win. European silver medallist Andrey Mikhnevich (he lost his gold in last round to German Ralf Bartels) was second with respectable 21,10.

Australian sprinter Patrick Johnson and Jamaican Ricardo Williams exchanged top positions in both sprints. On women side sprint double was achieved by Tashia Harrigan from British Virgin Islands. Olympic champion Joanna Hayes from USA won close hurdles battle over French Reina-Flor Okori and former world champion Perdita Felicien from Canada. Top three were separated only by 0.03 s.

The sensation of the event was only 20-years old local versatile talent Ksenija Balta. The national record holder in sprints (11.47 and 23.05 this year) and with heptathlon best of 6180 points went in long jump to great 680 in second round. He bettered her best 656 from Multievents European Cup in Arles by 24 cm and also the national record by 16 cm (Anna Kaljurand 664 in 1986). She also beat the former European Champion Tatyana Kotova from Russia who achieved 672 cm in first jump.
