Vlasic and Olsen the stars in Banska Bystrica

BANSKA BYSTRICA: The European Cup 2nd league A-group duels in central slovakian city of Banska Bystrica will be already third ones in the city in recent years. In 2000 (2nd league) and 2002 (1st league) all were held at the Stiavnicky Stadium which underwent some reconstruction works mainly for the warm-up facilities. For the first time here at European Cup both hammer competitions will be held in the main stadium. Despite Saturdays General Elections in Slovakia the local organisers are hoping for good crowds supporting specially both Slovak teams in its aims to qualify to 1st league. Men look like a good possibility, but the women will have it more tougher. Men from Ireland are the favourites in nearly all running events, but have small points possibilities in nearly all technical events. Slovakia has weaker long distances, but is good in all throws and jumps (except long jump). Very good on paper also Denmark and it looks like this could be the trio to fight for two promotional spots. But one should not forget Latvia and Israel only very close behind. The biggest star of men events is clearly the bronze medal winner from Olympic Games 2004 and current european indoor champion in Shot Put Joachim Olsen from Denmark. Other real big name is the European Champion 2002 and fourth at this years World Indoor Championships in Moscow the pole vaulter Alexander Averbukh from Israel. Other top athletes include from home team world championships finalists Libor Charfreitag (hammer), Mikulas Konopka (shot put) and Dmitrij Valukevic (triple jump). Other stars of Danish team are long jumper/sprinter Morten Jensen, pole vaulter Piotr Buciarski and triple jumper Anders Moller (17.01 indoors). Ireland brings to Slovakia the European Indoor Champion 2005 at 400 m David Gillick. New talent from Israel is high jumper Niki Palli (still a junior and recently bettered to 228 cm) who should fight for the first place with local star Peter Horak (on Tuesday in Bratislava bettered his best to 225 cm). Unfortunately Latvia is not sending its star athletes like hurdler Stanislav Olijars, 800 m runner Andrej Milkevics or Javelin throwers Vadim Vasilevskis or Ainars Kovals.

On the women side it looks like Norway are the clear favourites for win headed by star runner Susanne Wigene. But the biggest star for the weekend comes from croatian team – high jumper Blanka Vlasic. She has special memories for Banska bystrica as she here in February went at indoor High jump meeting over 205 cm and attacked the world record height of 209 cm. She is coming as recent winner of Ostrava and Oslo and ready to show something special. Her team with hammer thrower Ivana Brkljacic and youngster Danijela Gegic (silver at last years World Championships U17 in Morrocco at 400 m) is the main contender for the second promotional spot. But local team headed by 800 m runner Lucia Klocova, twinjumpers Dana and Jana Veldakova and hammer thrower Martina Danisova wants also to show its strength. Very close up there is also Denmark with javelin thrower Christina Scherwin (4th at World Championships 2005) and Israel with sprinter/hurdler candidate for win Irina Lenskiy.
