Good Results in Vilnius

VILNIUS, June 10 – Lithuania´s hero Virgilijus Alekna was the boss at his own meeting in Vilnius. The olympic and world champion won the 2nd Alekna´s World Discus Challenge clearly as all of his six throws would be enough for the first place. He remains this season unbeaten, winning all of his seven competitions. Last time he was not the winner was at the Tallinn meeting held just after Helsinki world championships as he was second with 65.91 (winner Frantz Kruger by 6 centimetres). His winning streak is now by number 13. The best effort of Alekna came on Saturday in his fifth throw with 69.73, actually his seasons best and fourth competition of the year with winning mark over 69 metres. „ I wanted to throw over 70 metres, but this did not happened. Also maybe because of the wind which came from the backside and was not very favourable. But otherwise I must be satisfied. We as in last year had great group of world best discus throwers here in Vilnius, also the spectators were happy, so overall the event was a big success,“ said Alekna who´s next competitions will be early July in Kaunas (July 1) and Athens (July 3). The event was held in festival area where a circle is builded already since last year in very nice weather conditions and before some 10 000 spectators which is unique taking into consideration that only one event was held. This confirms how popular Virgilijus Alekna is in Lithuania.

Second was World championships silver medallist Gerd Kanter from Estonia with 65.50 and third olympic silver medallist Zoltan Kovago from Hungary with 65.00 m. World list leader Alexander Tammert was only 5th.

Something special happened in junior categories. Supertalent Mykyta Nesterenko from Ukraine (15 years old, height 205 cm) achieved new world best with 1 kg discus 81.22 m.
