Alexander Zinchenko played handball throughout his youth and started Athletics late, in 2007. He moved with his parents from Ukraine to Portugal in 1996. His mother Valentina Fedjushina is Austrian record holder in the shot put (19,21m). His father Volodymyr Zinchenko has a PB of 68,88 in the discus throw and was 5th at the World Championships in Rome 1987 and Stuttgart 1993.
